It’s been described as London’s ‘new emblem’ and ‘the most beautiful addition to London’s skyline’. The Shard certainly doesn’t go unnoticed at a height of 310m. With a spectacular design that looks like an arrow destined for the sun, it evokes feelings of success, achievement, greatness and of power; in short, it reflects the aspirations and dreams of the London people.
Designed by Renzo Piano, the Shard has changed the London skyline and with it our outlook on our capital. The Italian architect had a clear vision which is now moving closer to reality every day, stating “I foresee the tower as a vertical city, for thousands of people to work in and enjoy, and for millions to take to their heart”.
No better sentence can summarise the Shard so accurately, it is exactly what it says on the tin, a city inside a skyscraper. You can work in the offices, live in an apartment, shop until your heart’s content, stay in a hotel, eat out at a restaurant, be entertained within the wide selection of bars and you can top it off by overlooking the entire city, all under one roof.
Now, that’s all far too much to cover in one post, so to make it much easier to digest, we’ll put the focus on the ‘The View from the Shard’ experience for today. If you’ve ever wanted to feel like a king (or queen) with London lying at your feet, with the possibility to see 40 miles into the distance on a clear day, this is probably for you.
Paying the £25.95 admission fee for a memory that lasts a life-time is good enough, but why not make the most of it? If you want to splurge and go a bit further, Champagne is also served by the bottle for £60 (£80 aged). Popcorn is priced at £2.50 a serving.
A visit to the top of the Shard is an excellent way to spend a Friday or Saturday night, you can choose the time slot that best suits you, with the Champagne Experience available from midday until 30 minutes before closing.
