What truly sets ili apart is that it allows for two-way communication between two people speaking different languages. How does ili work to deliver instant translation if it doesn’t need any form of Internet connection? It has its own, unique operating system that translates instantly. This means that, thankfully, you don’t have to shell out the big bucks for roaming data charges in countries that are far from your own.
Using ili is as simple as pushing the button—that’s it. Push the button, say what you want, and ili translates your words instantly. They are played back through the powerful speaker that is designed to project the translated message over the background noise so that the other party can hear it clearly. The biggest advantage of all this is that ili is voice activated, so you don’t have to type in your phrase and wait for a translator to spit out a literal translation with incorrect, nonsensical verbiage.
ili looks a lot like the white Apple TV remotes—or even a slimmer iPod Nano—hung around your neck. It’s just as lightweight as those devices, too. There is also a pre-loaded vocabulary library of travel lexicon, with up to 50,000 words and phrases.
Although ili isn’t available to purchase just yet, it should be available for pre-order around March or April. It’s expected to be around $200 in the US and to have about 24 hours of battery life.
