There’s a dedicated entrance for the restaurants in Heron Tower, from where a glass lift will whizz you in seconds up to Duck & Waffle on the 40th floor, or its glitzier sibling Sushisamba two floors below.
The views are, as you might expect, stunning – if you’re pointed in the right direction and, preferably, sitting at a window table (many of which are for two diners only). Alternatively, linger in the entrance bar, where you can press your nose against the glass and gawp unhindered.
The interior is a blend of glass, marble and wood with the feature being the low ceiling with a yellow ‘waffle’ design.
Food is an on-trend mix of small plates such as roasted octopus, spicy ox cheek doughnut and wild Cornish Pollack meatballs; raw offerings such as oysters, halibut and beef; and a few main courses including roast chicken, baked sea bass and Jerusalem artichoke and truffle ravioli. The title dish is two fluffy waffles with a hunk of crisp-skinned duck confit, a fried duck egg and a pitcher of spiced maple syrup. They also sell strips of crispy pig ear seasoned with sugar, salt and a few spices which are surprisingly enticing and moreish.
Desserts include Belgian waffles (obviously), orange pudding and chocolate brownie sundae, which taste more exciting than they sound and should be not dismissed.
Prices are reasonable but the cost of wine is as sky-high as the setting but it is well worth it. Enjoy the views on the 24 seat inside out bar offering every-changing artisanal cocktails such as Pumpkin Bellini, Roasted Cosmopolitan and Salted Caramel Manhattan.
With its sociable ambience, unparalleled views, artful interpretations of regional cuisine and innovative design, Duck & Waffle embodies a truly unique dining experience.
