Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town

mayor logoSQ2Allow us to introduce you to the ultimate London speakeasy – The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town.

Just like the 1920s/1930s illicit drinking dens this tongue-in-chic bar models itself on, it has a split personality. There’s the everyday, acceptable face of the venue – the family-friendly Breakfast Club on ground level and for those in the know there’s the incognito bar squarely aimed at adults.

Head to The Breakfast Club on Artillery Lane, just off Bishopsgate, where you’ll see a fairly normal looking Smeg fridge. Take your date by the hand, open the fridge door and walk through.

Inside you’ll find a moodily-lit quirky cocktail bar clad in exposed wood and brickwork, retro wallpaper, mirror balls and moose heads. With high stools and wooden tables this is the perfect pop-in place to have a quick one.

There is an air of exclusivity about this place; it’s a hidden den for a selected few to get away from the hustle and bustle of London life.

The playfulness is reinforced by the code of conduct on the menu: ”Only use the Smeg on your first entry of the night. Never depart via the Fridge. Act nonchalantly as if you’ve just had a pee. Gentlemen, you are advised to leave your fly down to add to the charade. Ladies, if you’d leave your skirt in your knickers, it would be greatly appreciated.”

Background music sets the scene for a laid-back meeting while the wide selection of cocktails range from the classic to the inventory; all of which are well-crafted and delicious. Sink into a mean dirty-sweet or dry martini, pear and cardamom sidecar, Lynchburg-Leith lemonade or chilli and lemongrass margarita. With Timothy Taylor, Cruzcampo and Modelo Especial on board, the beer list is also better than some. Wines cost from under £15 and there are simple sandwiches, platters and bar snacks on hand to soak up the suds.

If you manage to locate this cool candlelit bunker, you will be guaranteed a good time.
