Happiness Forgets

happiness forgets logoHappiness Forgets is a tiny bar hidden away in a basement in the centre of Shoreditch, and even though it’s hard to find, this place is always packed out. Happiness is a pretty dark venue, with brick walls painted blood red lit by candlelight and vintage lamps giving a romantic, cosy, almost drinking by the fire, kind of atmosphere.

It does make reading the menu a little tricky; good job they’re short yet perfectly formed then, and you can always call on the bartenders for a hand. They are knowledgeable and friendly and more than capable of making any classic cocktail alongside those listed on their menu, or making you something bespoke to your tastes.

The short list of original cocktails is unfailingly good: lots of nice twists on classic ideas but never departing from the essential cocktail principles of balance, harmony and drinkability. Expect simple and down to earth libations, which are well balanced and made with a lot of care and attention.

Ever since this place opened it’s been a bartenders favourite and it’s clear to see why; The Amelie, a mix of vodka, yellow chartreuse (a sweet French liqueur) and Sauvignon Blanc with lemon and grapefruit, is delicious and really refreshing – like a more exciting white wine spritzer. The Perfect Storm is a delicious blend of dark rum, honey and ginger juice with a dash of plum brandy, tasting like a grown up Dark and Stormy. Both are £8.50. If you’re after wine, you’ll get a glass of house white or red for £4. You can also have yourself a pint of Meantime London lager (£4) or Coopers Pale Ale (£4.50). And if you’re feeling peckish then order some snacks courtesy of the Thai place upstairs.

This place is a no frills, no fuss chilled-out bar with no gimmicks or pretence; they just focus on great cocktails.

If you’re the sort of person who likes to be ‘in the know’ and hang out in cool hidden underground bars, you’ll love Happiness Forgets. This place does get very busy and, with room for only 50 people, so it’s wise to book ahead or turn up early.

Service is quick, the bar staff know what they’re doing, and the atmosphere will instantly relax and perk you up, all at the same time.
