Sony Xperia Z

Xperia Z1 HandsetThe Xperia Z is Sony’s latest entry in the Japanese company’s expanding range of Android devices, and is their best phone to date.

Beautifully designed and expertly crafted, the design combines cutting edge technology with a simplistic, attractive design. The handset is not only shatterproof and dust-resistant, but it is completely waterproof and will survive for thirty minutes in a one-metre deep pool.

One of the highlights is the large 5 inch screen offering a ‘Reality Display’ with a high level of detail, colour, brightness and vibrancy thanks to the 443 ppi. The HD screen has incredible clarity and definition to compete with the likes of your home televisions.

A screen this size also requires a large battery to power it, which it has, but it will need regular charging. If you’re using the phone a lot and the screen is on a high brightness level, you’ll only get around four to five hours.

With the 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, it runs promptly and smoothly without and jerkiness or hiccups, meaning the overall performance is second to none. The pace combined with the power makes this phone fast and reliable.

Similar to the HTC One, you have the option to turn your entire home-screen into a giant news feed from your social networks and various content providers, and you can customise as you wish.

Of particular note is the 13.1 megapixel camera which has been deigned to be significantly impressive in low light offering detailed, sharp images with little noise or evidence of excessive noise reduction. You can take some wonderfully impressive shots, regardless of light conditions.

Meanwhile, NFC allows the device to communicate with other Sony products. Just by touching the phone to the TV, you can mirror the screen to show off all of your high-quality snaps.

The Xperia Z comes with support for 4G connectivity, which means it’s ready for the future of mobile. Sadly, only one network in the UK is offering this speedy service, so unless you’re already using EE and don’t mind buying the phone SIM-free, you’re not going to be able to take advantage of those blistering data transfer speeds just yet. This, of course, could change as 2013 rolls onwards — expect to see other providers offering 4G in the not-too-distant future.

This is a high-end smartphone, equipped with everything you could possibly need, making it one of the best Android devices money can buy right now.
