If Microsoft has its way, the Surface Pro 2 is the PC that every busy worker owns: a tablet, laptop and desktop in one that drives sales of Windows for years to come. The original Surface Pro, which only went on sale in May in the UK , hinted at this ambition but ultimately fell short in a few important ways. The Surface Pro 2 aims to correct its weaknesses but the aim is still very much the same: it wants to be your one and only PC and tablet device.
Microsoft has attacked improving the Surface Pro in numerous ways. On the software side of things there’s Windows 8.1, which brings several improvements that are keenly felt on the Surface Pro 2.
But the only serious hardware change is the signature built-in kickstand now has two levels, the standard ‘upright’ position (it’s actually not quite as upright as before) and a flatter, more laptop-esque angle. It’s a key difference because it mostly eliminates one of the 2012 Surface Pro’s biggest problems, the awkward angle of the screen when used sat a desk or on your lap.
Microsoft has improved the two ‘optional’ keyboard covers too. Both the Touch Cover 2 and Type Cover 2 are thinner and lighter than before, and both are now backlit. The Touch Cover 2, meanwhile, is much more sensitive and accurate. The addition of a 1,000 or so more senses makes it feel far more like an actual touch screen keyboard than a rough approximation of one.
Two more accessories have joined the roster; or rather will join it next year. The Power Cover (a keyboard with built-in battery) and a
Docking Station.
The key change is on the inside. Intel Haswell processor (aka 4th generation Core i) has a greater efficiency in reduced power and heat.
It is as fast as a top end ultra-book. What really matters however is
the battery life. The Surface Pro 2 is a vast improvement on the original.The first one lasted just short of four hours but the Pro 2 nearly
passes 8 hours.
As before, the 10.6-inch screen is outstanding. Its 1,920 x 1,080 resolution is plenty sharp enough at this size, particularly as Microsoft’s ClearType tech smooths the edges on text. It produces plenty of detail, has a nice level of contrast and is supremely bright meaning it easier to use outdoors. Colours are rich, blacks are clean and has a high level of contrast. With a measured peak brightness of 442 nits, it’s miles higher than the next best laptop.
Overall, Microsoft has sorted out most of the serious issues of the first version. This turns the Surface Pro 2 into a genuine contender for your money over an ultra-book or a larger iPad.
