The Huawei Ascend P6 is stylish, powerful and pleasantly-priced.
The design is elegant and cool, similar-looking to the iPhone but with a bolder, more masculine edge. It’s billed as the ‘world’s slimmest smartphone’ and it’s certainly a skinny number coming in at just 6.18mm thick. Available in black, white and pink with chiselled edges and a metal chassis.
On the right of the phone there are SIM and microSD trays, along with power and volume controls. The opposite side lives the headphone jack which is concealed behind a removable pin. Inserted into the headphone jack is a cap, which you must remove and store in order to use headphones. This seems like a complete waste of time, until you realise that the pin on the inside is used to open the SIM and microSD card-trays.
The phone is ultra-powerful with a quad-core 1.GHz processor and 2GB of RAM which enhances the overall performance making it fast and smooth like a premium handset with his response levels and good memory. Storage is good with 8GB and a microSD card that means up to 64GB of extra capacity can be bought.
The screen is good with a 4.7-inch LCD and a resolution of 720 x 1280, which translates into 312dpi. It’s sharp, detailed and defined with great viewing angles and natural colours. The phone’s 8 megapixel camera performs well with little to no noise, and is even clear and defined when you zoom in to 100 per cent scale.
It also has Gorilla Glass 2 which should prevent any cracks or scratches, ideal for pockets. The only downfall of this phone is the battery life, you need to charge it every day and as the battery is concealed into the back of the phone, there’s no way to swap it.
The P6 has the latest version of what Huawei calls the Emotion UI. This sits halfway between Android and iOS, in that it has widgets but there is no distinction between homescreens and the app tray. It’s clean-looking and modern and makes it different from any other Androids.
The P6 is a quality bit of kit, and a serious contender if you’re looking for a good-value smartphone.
