The English fashion designer, Sir Paul Smith, is the successful and highly respected menswear icon, famous for his collections of clothing and accessories.
His designs combine the classic with the quirky, allowing men to buy relatively traditional, commercially popular designs that offer a twist of individuality.
His collections are usually identified by the multi-stripe signature strategically placed on every item, and you can often spot the icon featuring heavily on the red carpet worn by the social elite and fame hungry.
After the success of his first shop in Nottingham in 1970, Smith showed his first menswear collection in Paris. He gradually expanded the retail business, being the first fashion brand to open on Floral Street in London’s Covent Garden in 1979, where his shop offered an eclectic combination of clothing reflecting cutting edge fashion for the modern man.
Even though the Paul Smith label has now grown to international success with shops all around the four corners of the globe from Dubai, to Bangalore, to Los Angeles, with showrooms in London, Paris, Milan, New York and Tokyo, Smith remains fully involved in the business, designing clothes, choosing fabrics, approving the shop locations and overseeing every development within the company. Today there are 12 different collections, all designed in Nottingham and London, and primarily produced in England and Italy, while the fabrics used are mainly of Italian, French and British origin.
The most recent collection SS13 offers bold, vibrant colours, sharply dissected prints, and elegant masculine tailoring. Smith has always had a fantastic way of blending Savile Row craft with a childlike playfulness to provide a contemporary youthful collection, while still exuding a sense of charming Britishness.
Shades of mustards, strawberries, peaches and apricots weave their way through the collection full of mixed and matched summer hues creating a variety of looks which are smart, flamboyant, and wearable.
Jackets from this collection come in either a slim one-button cut or a refined double-breasted style. Shoulders are subtly padded to provide shape without bulk, while on the lower half, the trousers are similarly slim yet structured, with innovative seams and pleats.
Graphic designs include rose-prints, polka dots and plaids offering a beautiful dimension which is carefully crafted to provide a complementary addition linking seamlessly with the gorgeous colours and cuts.
Paul Smith’s attention to detail is witnessed through the evident intense craftsmanship that has gone into the beautiful leather sandals and Chelsea boots, as well as striking oversized bags sporting a development of the classic Paul Smith stripe.
