Sharing the same City of London street as the Bank of England, The Mercer is one seriously good British restaurant. Situated in a former bank itself, this chic London restaurant is a hot favourite amongst the areas high fliers, offering sophisticated glamour and opulence.
Neatly arranged copies of the Financial Times set the tone for this most urbane and business-friendly of City dining rooms, where suited folk dine beneath high ceilings in a setting of sober elegance: well-spaced tables, cream leather chairs and white napery contrast with glossy dark columns and a long, mirror-backed bar. An upstairs refurb has dramatically increased capacity, too.
Open from Monday to Friday, The Mercer is one of the area’s top destinations for business dining, offering a divine British menu accompanied by a star studded wine list that is certain to impress even the most demanding oenophile. Service is ‘first class’, and the versatile menu features only the very finest ingredients in dishes.
Starters run from ox-tongue salad with pea shoots to comfort options of hot goat’s cheese and fig toasts with spiced green lentils. Mains, though, are the stand-out. From melt-in-the-mouth calf’s liver (with bubble, grilled bacon and onion gravy) to slow-braised venison shank so tender it falls off the bone, to decent Mercer pie (rump steak, mushrooms, London porter ale) – British meat and game are also given a fine showcase. Seared scallops with artichoke mash, leeks, and lobster dressing is good too,
Be sure to leave room for spotted dick with custard or round off with British cheeses from Paxton & Whitfield. The eclectic 400-bin wine list is tailored to expense accounts, with more than 30 fine vintages by the glass or carafe.
You’ll never fail to impress or be impressed at The Mercer, the perfect restaurant for business and pleasure.
