Just off Brick Lane, Apples and Pears London has a self-confidence that merges well with the neighbourhood. It’s cool, but not painfully; there’s an emphasis on delivering the goods – style as well as substance.

The ground floor bar, dressed in green and black is an amazing space, utilising street lamps on the walls and unique design touches. The same level of attention to detail is evident throughout the building and even extends to the small garden area at the back. The same care has been lavished on the cocktails.

Drinks are prepared with care and attention and are consistently inventive. Their Banglatini blends rum and watermelon to very pleasant effect while their Columbia Martini is all about the mango and practically begs to be sipped on a hot evening. The music policy is also worth commenting on – no cheese or dodgy chart pop here.

Now climaxing with a live act, Saturday nights bring indie/folktronica, psychedelic rocker sounds, & all things bluesy in rotation; Wednesday is acoustic night, & guest DJs preside over Thursdays & Fridays. During the week, office workers give way to pop-pickers as the night wears on, with out-of-town bands supported by their home crowd at the weekend.

The ground-floor bar, formerly a mobile-phone emporium, mixes makeshift artiness with retro parlour stylings; downstairs has more of a dimly it, clubby feel. The cocktail list pays boozy tribute to the East End, with the Old Truman (brandy with apples & pears), the fashion fizz (gin, lemon, passion fruit) & the Banglatini (spiced rum, watermelon, chilli). Pieminster pies provide tasty ballast, served with mash, peas & gravy.
