The Certificate for Introduction to Securities and Investment

The Certificate for Introduction to Securities and Investment is a foundation course for anyone wishing to start or progress their career within the financial services industry.

The aim of the course is to provide individuals with an understanding of the breadth of the sector, the regulatory framework, how the industry functions and the basics of the various financial instruments, such as shares, bonds and derivatives.

The course is taught by Martin Jackson, a Senior Lecturer in Law, who has enjoyed nine years practical experience in the financial services industry, primarily as a market maker and proprietary trader in equities in both London and North America. Following his call to the Bar he also worked with several solicitors’ firms on a variety of serious financial crime cases. He has also been teaching aspects of business law, company law and financial services law at the undergraduate level for 14 years.

Anyone can undertake the course and there are no formal entry requirements, although those with industry experience will be able to relate what they learn directly to their job.

Content
The subject matter is broken down into various chapters, the first of which looks at an overall introduction to financial services and the economic environment. The course then goes into more detail about different asset classes, in particular, distinguishing the features between equity (shares) and debt (bonds). It then proceeds to look at a series of financial products (such as loans and mortgages), derivatives (such as futures and options), pooled investment funds (such as unit trusts) and investment wrappers (such as ISAs). We then conclude with a basic review of both financial services regulation and an examination of the taxation and trust system in the UK.
